A private backyard resort

This isn't a backyard, it's a private resort. A resort-style pool with waterfalls and a spa, multiple fire features and outdoor kitchens, a sauna and cold plunge, an outdoor shower and guest bathroom, a putting green, covered pavilions with a fireplace and TV, and built-in surround sound throughout. Planned from scratch and built entirely in-house, and the client has since had us back to add even more.

Castle Harbour estate

A complete front-to-back transformation: a custom pool, an elegant pavilion, a gas fireplace, a full irrigation system, a spiral staircase and professionally designed plantings throughout. Photographed again years later with the plant material all grown in, the place looks spectacular.

A resort with a grotto and water slide

A massive undertaking, and we loved every second of it. A huge pool with a grotto and swim-up bar, a water slide, a dedicated eating area and custom lighting, a true paradise in the client's own backyard.

The whole yard, one level

A rectangular pool set into a paver terrace that runs the full width of the property, with a cabana at the far end and a fire table where the seating collects. The grade was brought up so the whole yard reads as one level, which is what makes it feel like a room rather than a pool with a path around it.

The mood after dark

Most of the evening you spend out here, you are looking at whatever is lit. So the lighting is drawn at the same time as the hardscape and the conduit goes in before the pavers do. Task light at the kitchen, low-level light on every change in grade so nobody misses a step, uplighting into the planting, and fire and water where the eye lands.

Cedar ceiling, stone fireplace, no walls

A full timber pavilion at the head of the pool terrace: cedar ceiling, fans, recessed lighting, a stone fireplace and a kitchen along the back wall. With a roof overhead and a fire going, the space still gets used on the evenings an open patio empties out.

A custom spiral staircase down to the lower patio

The upper deck and the lower patio were two separate spaces with no good way between them. A straight run of stairs would have eaten the corner the seating needed, so the connection is a custom spiral in black steel with timber treads, landing on a stone-clad walk-out beside the built-in kitchen and spa. It occupies about the footprint of an armchair.

The cabana with the roll-up window

A cabana in painted board and cedar, with a roll-up window that opens the whole front into a bar. Planters along the base, stool seating across the front, and a run of counter deep enough to actually work on. Inside, a lounge with a screen above the bar. Closed up, the window rolls down and it locks.

Under the maples

A timber pergola over built-in bench seating, a long linear fire feature set into the stone, and a pair of Japanese maples doing the work that a fence cannot. Room for the whole family, including a playhouse tucked into the corner where it can be seen from every seat.
